China’s Rockin’ With Big Quakes

The Himalayan Mountains.

The Himalayan Mountains have been pushed up north of India into China due to compression, and this ancient area is active with earthquakes today.

China is experiencing a rash of earthquakes, starting with a 7.0 magnitude quake (downgraded to a 6.9) on February 12, 2014.

The Activity

These quakes are occurring northeast of the Himalaya Mountains where the original Craton boundary is located, all within a short timeframe:

  1. 6.9 (7.0?) ESE Hoton, China
  2. 5.0 ESE Hoton, China
  3. 4.6 ESE Hoton, China
  4. 5.5 ESE Hoton, China

  6. 4.7 ESE Hoton, China
  7. 4.5 ESE Hoton, China
  8. 4.7 ESE Hoton, China

This is not a highly populated area, which is a good thing.
